Slovenske gorice – how beautiful you are!

“Slovenske gorice - how beautiful you are! Hill after hill rising from the ground appear as waves of the sea flowed away long ago. Oh wine-growing hills, how charming you are, lovely with your white wine rooms on tops, large vineyards and rich orchards. You are the pearl of the countryside; poetry surrounds you, so beautiful, so rich! And with castles, glorious, mighty, live witnesses of lords that ruled over the Slovene people, who sighed under their heavy yoke. But all has passed!” (Ilaunig, 1988, p. 7)
Municipality Lenart, at the heart of the Slovenske gorice region, where tradition and contemporaneity, the country and the city pulse meet, has experienced many changes throughout history.

Municipality Lenart, at the heart of the Slovenske gorice region, where tradition and contemporaneity, the country and the city pulse meet, has experienced many changes throughout history.

Lenart is the centre of the Slovenske gorice region, of its most typical and central part. It lies on a higher terrace between the Globovnica and the Velka brook. Both have flooded in the past, but today the channels are regulated and the farmland reclaimed. The hills are composed of Miocene marls and grits, the southwest area of Lithuania limestone. Because of good living conditions, the area was already populated in the Miolitic era, and especially in Roman times. The Slovenske gorice region is densely populated; we are dealing with a specific type of dispersed settlement found on flat, oblong ridges in long strings, accentuated with poplars as natural lightning conductors. Smaller clustered settlements have formed only around churches, which are usually found on tops of ridges. The diverse landscape is not created only by the ground relief, but also by various production cultures laid out so that the shady sides of hills are covered with forest, the sunny sides with vineyards, valleys with pastures and meadows and margins with fields and orchards.
Municipality Lenart is composed of the local community Voličina and local community Lenart and measures 61.80 square kilometers. According to the 2007 data it has about 7.319 inhabitants and 2.126 households. It comprises the following settlements: Črmljenšak, Dolge njive, Gradenšak, Hrastovec v Slovenskih goricah, Lenart v Slovenskih goricah, Lormanje, Močna, Nadbišec, Radehova, Rogoznica, Selce, Spodnja Voličina, Spodnje Partinje, Spodnji Porčič, Spodnji Žerjavci, Straže, Šetarova, Vinička vas, Zamarkova, Zgornja Voličina, Zavrh and Zgornji Žerjavci. It is a typical and central municipality of the Slovenske gorice region, which has, in opinion of many, preserved its rural character.
There are 400 agricultural economies in the municipality and the most developed branches are cattle breeding, fruit cultivation and wine-growing.
206 craftsmen, private entrepreneurs and companies are members of the Regional Chamber of Craft and Small Business Lenart.
The municipality has two primary schools with kindergarten units, a music school, adult education institute, general library, community health care centre, private outpatient clinics, physiotherapy, pharmacy and veterinary aid station.
The following organizations and institutions also operate in Lenart: Local Court Lenart, Police Station Lenart, Administrative Unit Lenart, branch office of the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia, Labour Office Lenart, Social Work centre Lenart, branch office of Maribor Tax Office, notary, Regional Chamber of Craft and Small Business Lenart, Agricultural Advisory Service Lenart, branch office of the Republic of Slovenia Public Fund for Cultural Activities, post offices and banks.

Social life in Lenart is very active because of the functioning of 94 associations: sport clubs, cultural, tourist and firemen associations, pensioners’ organization and many others. Religious and spiritual life takes place in parochial churches of Saint Leonard in Lenart and Saint Rupert in Voličina.
Participating in various cultural activities has always enriched the lives of people in the Slovenske gorice region. In view of the tradition and the possibilities, the cultural areas that were the closest and most accessible to the people, have evolved. Culture and art societies are active within local communities without professional musical institutions or theatre. Each play, choir, folklore or puppet group performance requires the work of many people, who love what they do and thus sacrifice their free time. A full hall and applause are their reward.
Municipality Lenart, which lies at the heart of the Slovenske gorice region attracts tourists with its diversity from the hills to the lowland, natural beauties, as well as many natural, historical and cultural monuments, sports events and preserved folk tradition. Local inhabitants and inhabitants of the wider area of Slovenia and Austria take part in the tourist offer.
Numerous historical and cultural monuments are particularly attractive for tourist. To mention only a few:
- Hrastovec with its castle and a beautiful chivalrous hall, first mentioned in the 13th century,
- Voličina with its 15th century church and 16th century sacristan’s house,
- old buildings in Lenart (špital – hospital for incurables, rotovž – town hall),
- Zavrh with Rudolf Maister's room, cellar and tower,
- lake Radehova and Pristava,
- nature reserve Komarnik.

In short, municipality Lenart connects the city pulse and the scent of the countryside. It attracts those who love nature, beautiful views and sporting activities. It is especially interesting for hikers, bikers, fishermen and hunters. Vagrancy in the hills of Slovenske gorice, among vineyards, lakes and rivers, offers relaxation and pleasure. Local inns and farm tourisms offer traditional Slovene and modern cuisine. Good wine, fruit and local specialties invigorate your body and soul.
